EAST LANSING, Mich. -- A second-half resurgance led to a 5-1 Michigan State field hockey victory over Massachusetts on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Ralph Young Field. The Spartans have won seven consecutive games and now post a 7-1 record on the season, while the Minutewomen continue their winless season at 0-6.
The first half of play had a foreign flavor as all the scoring was done by the MSU's Netherlands contingent. Junior Sophie Rosmalen (Oss, Netherlands) opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, weaving through the crowd to score the unassisted goal. Massachusetts evened the score eight minutes later. The Spartans quickly retook the lead, with a goal by sophomore Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands) from a pass by classmate Judith van Haeringen (Hauge, Netherlands). Beerman's mark was her tenth of the season.
While the first half was fairly evenly matched, the second half was all MSU. The Spartans withstood five minutes being a man down to claim the victory. Sophomore Michelle Carstens (Edwardsville, Ill.) tapped in a goal from Beerman at the 52:12 mark and senior Cynthia Martin (Vancouver, British Columbia) added a penalty shot goal less than three minutes later. Rosmalen tallied her second goal of the game to secure the MSU victory at the 68:54 mark.
Michigan State netminder Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, NY) made seven saves on the day. Five of Kirkaldy's saves came in the first half, as she saw limited action around her net in the second.
Michigan State returns to Ralph Young Field tomorrow (Sept. 22) at noon to face No.4 James Madison. The Dukes are currently 5-1 on the season. Following the Spartans' game with JMU, Massachusetts will take on Ohio at 2:30 p.m.
