EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 6 Michigan State field hockey team shut out fourth-ranked James Madison under cold, rainy conditions at Ralph Young Field on Sunday, Sept. 22. Sophomore Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands) scored the game-winning tally, as MSU rolled to its eighth straight victory.
Michigan State (8-1 overall) got on the board at just 2:19 into the game, with a penalty corner score by Beerman. Her 11th goal of the season was assisted by seniors Julia Adams (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Jenny Sanders (Vancouver, British Columbia). With her sixth assist of the season, Adams moves into a tie for third-place on the all-time career assist list. Sanders' assist, her ninth of the season, moves her into sole possession of fourth-place on the list.
The Spartans kept James Madison off of the boards for the remainder of the game, as MSU goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, NY), made five stops, including four in the second half as the Dukes mounted a comeback. It was an evenly matched game as MSU held a slim 15-11 advantage in shots and an 8-6 lead in penalty corners.
Michigan State returns to Ralph Young Field on Friday, Sept. 27, for the Big Ten Conference opener against Penn State. The game, which will begin a 7 p.m., is the first game to be played under the lights at the new field.
