NORFOLK, Va. -- The Michigan State field hockey team defeated William and Mary 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 1, for the first victory of the 2002 season at Foreman Field on the campus of Old Dominion. Sophomore Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands) scored the game-winning mark for MSU. The Spartans improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Tribe falls to 0-2.
The Spartans outshot the Tribe 5-1 in the scoreless first-half. Both teams remained without a score until the 66th minute of play when Beerman netted the unassisted goal for the MSU victory. The goal was Beerman's third of the weekend. It also marked her second unassisted tally on the year.
MSU goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, NY) made four stops on the day for her first collegiate shutout.
Michigan State returns to East Lansing on Friday, Sept. 6, to open the home portion of the season at the new Ralph Young Field. The Spartans will take on St. Joseph's for the first time in program history at 4 p.m.
