The Michigan State University field hockey team defeated the University of the Pacific, 7-0, on Saturday, Sept. 7. Five different players tallied goals for Michigan State, as the offensively minded Spartans shut out the visiting Pacific Tigers at Ralph Young Field.
Michigan State (3-1 overall) made their impact on the scoreboard just over two minutes into the game. Junior Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands) scored off of a penalty corner, taking the pass from senior Julia Adams (Vancouver, British Columbia) and sophomore Judith van Haeringen (Hague, Netherlands). van Haeringen added her own score off of a penalty corner three minutes later, with Adams and senior Jenny Sanders (Vancouver, British Columbia) earning the helpers.
Spartan freshman Jessica Miller (Hockessin, Del.) earned her first collegiate goal at the 14:01 mark on an unassisted strike and teammate Michelle Carstens (Edwardsville, Ill.) notched a goal at 27:32. Beerman tallied her second goal of the day off of an assist from van Haeringen to close out the half with a 5-0 lead.
The Spartans received an early second half score from junior Alexandra Kyser (Columbus, Ohio), who tabbed her first goal of the season from a van Haeringen pass. Carstens teamed up with Beerman for her second tally on the day at the 60:10 mark to end the game with a 7-0 score.
Michigan State split net minding duties between sophomore Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, NY) and junior Lauren Hess (Los Angeles, Calif.) for the second straight day. Kirkaldy made two saves off of three shots in the first half, while Hess made a single save from the Tigers' lone second half shot attempt.
The Spartans outshot the Tigers 27-4 and took a 10-0 advantage on penalty corners. During the two-game home stand, Michigan State outshot the opponents 13-1. MSU returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 10, when they travel to Mt. Pleasant, Mich., to take on the Central Michigan Chippewas at 3 p.m.
