EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 5 Michigan State field hockey team defeated No. 11 Louisville, 4-2, on Sunday, Oct. 13, at the MSU Field Hockey Complex. With the victory, the Spartans improve to 13-2 (2-1 Big Ten) on the season, while the Cardinals move to 10-5 (4-1 MAC.
Despite cold, windy conditions, the Spartans got on the board first with a penalty corner goal by sophomore Judith van Haeringen (Hague, Netherlands). Seniors Julia Adams and Jenny Sanders, both natives of Vancouver, British Columbia, assisted on the goal under seven minutes into the game. Sophomore Michelle Carstens (Edwardsville, Ill.) tallied her 10th goal of the season of of a Cynthia Martin (Vancouver, British Columbia) pass to put the Spartans up with a two goal lead at the half.
Michigan State added another goal in the 43rd minute with an Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands) score. Adams earned her second assist of the day on Beerman's Big Ten-leading 14th goal of the season.
Louisville halted the shutout in the 46th minute, as Joanie Frame pushed in a pass from Desire' Miller. Carstens responded with her second goal of the day, knocking in a score from Beerman. It was Carstens' third multi-goal game of the season. The Cardinals added one more goal in the 69th minute with a goal from Danielle Barr to Olivia Netzler, but Michigan State prevailed for its 13th goal of the season.
MSU netminder Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, N.Y.) made five saves on the day, while Louisville's goalie stopped 11 chances. The Spartans outshot the Cardinals 20-15, but held an 11-4 advantage in penalty corners.
The Spartans continue thier five-game homestand on Saturday, Oct. 19, against No. 13 Iowa at the MSU Field Hockey Complex. The Big Ten contest, which is a part of the squad's parents' weekend, is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
