EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 5 Michigan State field hockey team defeated No. 13 Iowa, 2-1, on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the MSU Field Hockey Complex. With the win, the Spartans improve to 14-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Big Ten, while Iowa moves to 8-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Michigan State got on the scoreboard first as freshman Michelle Huynh-Ba (Hockessin, Del.) tipped in a pass from junior Sophie Rosmalen (Oss, Netherlands) in the 18th minute. Huynh-Ba's score was her eighth of the season and Rosmalen earned her fifth assist of the year.
Iowa evened up the match just 18 seconds before halftime, with Pattie's Gillern's penalty corner goal from Lindsay Miller and Lauren Edwards. The game remained tied until the 48th minute when senior Julia Adams (Vancouver, British Columbia) knocked in an unassisted strike. The goal was Adams' fourth goal of the season and her second game-winning mark.
Michigan State returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. to take on the Ball State Cardinals at the MSU Field Hockey Complex.
