EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 5 Michigan State field hockey team handed head coach Michele Madison her 150th career victory on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the MSU Field Hockey Complex. The Spartans scored five goals in the second half, en route to a 5-1 victory over Indiana University in Big Ten Conference play.
Michigan State (12-2, 2-1 Big Ten) and Indiana (3-9, 1-2 Big Ten) remained scoreless throughout the first half of play, but the Spartans had numerous scoring chances. MSU had ten shots at the cage in the opening half and strong offensive pressure kept the Hoosiers without a single shot attempt.
Michigan State got on the board in the 44th minute, when freshman Michelle Huynh-Ba (Hockessin, Del) tapped in a cross pass from senior Julia Adams (Vancouver, British Columbia) for her seventh goal of the season. Freshman Jessica Miller (Carlsbad, Calif.) earned her third goal of the season at 52:24, with a pass from Judith van Haeringen (Hague, Netherlands).
Indiana had its first shot attempt in the 54th minute of the game and scored on the rebound. Nikki Orcuich caught the ball off of Christina Kirkaldy's (Afton, N.Y.) only save of the day, to sneak in the score.
Michigan State scored its final three goals in the last ten minutes to put the game away. Cynthia Martin (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Michelle Carstens (Edwardsville, Ill.) each scored off of van Haeringen passes. Freshman Megan Kunk (Powell, Ohio) earned her first score of her collegiate career from sophomore Sophie Rosmalen (Oss, Netherlands).
MSU statistically dominated the game, outscoring Indiana 31-2 and holding a 19-0 advantage in penalty corners. Kirkaldy did not see much action, making just the single save, while her Hoosier counterpart had to make 14 stops.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow (Oct. 13) to face No. 11 Louisville. The game is scheduled to start 1 p.m. at the MSU Field Hockey Complex.
