Field Hockey Defeats American In Overtime, 2-1

East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State field hockey team defeated American in overtime, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Duffy Daugherty Indoor Facility on the MSU campus. The Spartans improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 1-3.
Cynthia Martin (Soph., Vancouver, B.C.) scored her second career game-winning goal with 4:45 remaining in the first overtime session on a rebound after a penalty corner. The goal was Martin's second of the season.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on a goal by Alexandra Kyser (Fr., Columbus, Ohio). Kyser tipped in a pass from Bridget Cooper (Soph., Winnetka, Ill.), who earned her team-leading fourth point of the season with the assist.
The Eagles struck back at the 21:54 mark in the first period, knotting the game at one after Magadelana Aguliar put in a rebound off the goalpost.
The Spartans dominated play throughout most of the game, holding a 16-6 advantage on penalty corners and outshooting the Eagles 21-9. Goalie Mireille Evans (Soph., Castlegar, B.C.) posted six saves for the Spartans, while Lauren McDonnell had nine stops for the Eagles.
Michigan State returns to action next weekend in Boston, Mass. The Spartans face Providence on Sept. 15 and take on Northeastern Sept. 16.
