Brookline, Mass. - It took penalty strokes to decide Sunday afternoon's field hockey contest between No. 18 Michigan State and No. 10 Northeastern. Each team scored in the first half, and following a scoreless second half, first overtime and second overtime, MSU outscored NU 3-2 in penalty strokes for the 2-1 victory. The Spartans extend their winning streak to five and improve to 6-2 overall, while the Huskies fall to 4-2.
Julia Adams (Soph., North Vancouver, B.C.), Kate Wade (Jr., Hartwich, Mass.) and Lotte Hagen (Fr., Utrecht, Netherlands) made respective penalty strokes for the Spartans, while only Catriona Semple and Lorna Dobbie managed to score for the Huskies.
In collegiate field hockey, after two overtimes, the game is decided by a series of five penalty strokes by each team. Whichever team scores the most is awarded one goal to its overall score and the victory.
Bridget Cooper (Jr., Winnetka, Ill.) scored less than six minutes into the game to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. However, Fior D'Alize Arrindell notched her third goal in as many games to tie the game at 1-1 with 8:37 remaining in the first half. The rest of the game went scoreless as the defenses and goaltenders dominated play for both teams.
Goalie Mireille Evans (Soph., Castlegar, B.C.) had five saves for MSU while Kathleen Madaus had 10 stops for the Huskies.
Michigan State returns to action Friday, Sept. 22, to face Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.
