Field Hockey Falls To Northwestern In Overtime, 3-2

Evanston, Ill. - The No. 15 Michigan State field hockey team lost its Big Ten opener to Northwestern, 3-2 in overtime, Saturday afternoon at Lakeside Field on the campus of Northwestern. The Spartans fall to 6-3 (0-1 Big Ten), while the Wildcats improve to 3-5 (1-0).
Bridget Cooper (Jr., Winnetka, Ill.) started the scoring in the first period as she took a pass from Jenny Sanders (Soph., W. Vancouver, B.C.) and Cynthia Martin (Soph., Vancouver, B.C.) and edged it past Wildcat goalkeeper Jessica Yates to put MSU up 1-0. The goal was Cooper's third on the year.
Northwestern answered with no time left on the clock at the end of the first period when Colleen Hotz redirected a Nicole Smith shot off a penalty corner to tie the score at the half.
The Spartans again took the lead in the second half as Julia Adams (Soph., N. Vancouver, B.C.) converted a penalty stroke for her third goal of the season.
The Wildcats came back to tie the game 2-2 late in the second period after Smith converted a direct corner. Assisting her on the play was Jodie Condie and Wendy Roberts.
In overtime, the Spartans had numerous chances to score, but couldn't convert on two penalty corners. Northwestern scored the game-winning goal with 8:59 remaining in the overtime session as Smith earned her fifth point of the day by firing a shot past MSU goalie Mireille Evans (Soph., Castlegar, B.C.).
Michigan State returns to action tomorrow to face St. Louis in Evanston, Ill.
