St. Louis, Mo. - The No. 18 Michigan State field hockey team exploded for four second period goals to break open a close game and move on to a 5-1 victory over Saint Louis at the Anheuser-Busch Conference & Sports Centre on Thursday afternoon. The Spartans snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 7-5 on the season, while the Billikens fall to 4-8.
Michigan State jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal off a penalty corner. Bridget Cooper (Jr., Winnetka, Ill.) received a pass from Jenny Sanders (Soph., W. Vancouver, B.C.) and converted to give MSU a 1-0 lead until intermission.
In the second period, MSU scored four goals, including three in just under nine minutes. Maureen Halstead (Jr., N. Dartmouth, Mass.) started the scoring with 27:59 remaining, followed by a Julia Adams (Soph., N. Vancouver, B.C.) goal three minutes later. Saint Louis tallied its lone goal on a breakaway attempt by Alisa Hebert with 21:10 left, but the Spartans responded just two minutes later on a goal by Lotte Hagen (Fr., Utrecht, The Netherlands). Cooper added her second goal of the game and sixth of the season with 2:17 left in the game to close out the Spartan scoring.
Michigan State has the weekend off before returning to action Oct. 10 to face Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant at 3:00 p.m.
