EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 11 Michigan State field hockey team lost to California, 2-1, in double overtime this afternoon at Spartan Stadium. The loss drops the Spartans to 6-3 overall, while California improves to 6-3.
MSU got on the board first when freshman Julia Adams (N. Vancouver, British Columbia) converted a pass from sophomore Bridget Cooper (Winnetka, Ill.) at the 19:05 mark of the first half.
Freshman goalkeeper Mireille Evans (Castlegar, British Columbia) stopped a California penalty stroke with 5:18 remaining in the second half to keep the score at 1-0. Evans recorded 15 saves for the game.
California tied the game with 2:39 left in the second half after Sara Brown converted on a penalty corner. The game then remained tied until well into the second overtime.
Cal was awarded a second penalty stroke with 5:36 remaining in the second extra session when it was ruled that Evans sat on the ball in front of the Michigan State goal. Robin Meschke converted the stroke to end the game.
?We let them stay in it too long,? said Michigan State head coach Michele Madison. ?Mireille Evans kept us in it again and our team had some quick opportunities early, but we need to be stronger around the net. California took advantage of the chances they had and that was the difference.?
MSU returns to action tomorrow afternoon, Sept. 26, closing out their five-game-homestand with a 1 p.m. matchup against No. 20 Ohio at Spartan Stadium. The Spartans then hit the road for a pair of Big Ten games on Oct. 1 at Penn State and Oct. 3 at Ohio State.
