EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 11 Michigan State field hockey team lost, 1-0, to No. 12 Michigan this evening at the Duffy Daugherty Indoor Facility. The loss drops the Spartans to 6-2 overall, 0-1 in the Big Ten, while Michigan improves to 4-3, 1-0.
The game was a defensive struggle, with the teams combining for just eight shots overall. The Wolverines scored the game?s lone goal with just 7:10 remaining in the second half on a penalty corner. Kelli Gannon converted from the top of the circle on a shot that deflected off a stick past MSU freshman goalie Mireille Evans (Castlegar, British Columbia). For the game, Evans recorded three saves.
Michigan secured the victory by stopping a pair of MSU penalty corners in the final seconds of regulation. The Spartans were denied on their first corner of the game with only 1:02 remaining in the second half, and were stymied again with only 25 seconds left in the game.
?At this level, against the top teams in the country, sometimes you only get one opportunity,? said MSU head coach Michele Madison, ?and we didn?t convert when we had the chance. But I thought Mireille played well and our back four did a great job under pressure. They held it together as long as they could. We just need to keep practicing the offense we know until we get it right.?
Michigan State returns to action this weekend with a pair of games a Spartan Stadium. The Spartans face off against the University of California Saturday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. and return the following afternoon, Sept. 26, to take on Ohio University, also at 1 p.m.
