Three Spartans Punch Their Tickets to the NCAA Finals in First Day of the NCAA East First Round

LEXINGTON, Ky. – In the first day of the NCAA East First Round, three Spartans punched their tickets to the NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
In the first event of the meet, Xavier Griffiths earned his first trip to the NCAA Finals in the men's hammer throw. He threw over 60m in all three attempts. With his third attempt, he set a new personal best with a throw of 65.99m to finish 12th. The throw of 65.99m was second-best in Michigan State history.
In the men's shot put, brothers Colby and Dillon Morlock will be making their first trips to the NCAA Championships. Colby Morlock qualified, finishing 11th with a best throw of 18.77m. Dillon Morlock was just behind him in 12th with a throw of 18.73m.
In a packed field in the 1500m, Tim Cherry just missed advancing to the semifinal. In the third heat, he finished ninth with a time of 3:48.95.
Adam Blue ended his season in a competitive pole vault. He cleared 5.05m to finish tied for 23rd.
On Thursday, the attention turns to the women. Michigan State will have seven athletes in action, beginning with All-American Elle Adrian in the hammer throw at 10 a.m. Tess Roman will be in action in the javelin at 1 p.m.
In the evening session, Olivia Millen get the Spartans' started in the quarterfinals of the 1500m at 6:30 p.m. Jessica Stieb and Rylan Finstrom look to punch their tickets at 6:30 p.m. in the shot put, while at the same time Sophia Mettes will be competing in the semifinals of the pole vault. MSU will round out the night with Sydnee Sinn in the first round of the 800m at 7:50 p.m.
