East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State softball dropped a 3-0 pitchers duel on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0, at Secchia Stadium. The Spartans drop to 17-30 (2-16 B1G), while Maryland climbs to 18-29 (4-19 B1G) on the season.
Aubrey Wurst pitched the complete game for Maryland, earning her fifth win of the season in a one-hit gem, striking out five and walking five while allowing just one base hit - a first-inning double to Sydney Doloszycki. Wurst retired the final seven Spartans in order, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth.
Carsyn Cassady suffered the loss in the circle for MSU, where she went 6.1 innings, allowed just two hits, and struck out four.
The game was a one-run affair until the seventh. Mariah Penta led off the top of the inning with a double to left. Matti Benson walked, and Zayda Rocke moved the runners into scoring position. After Anna McGowan was hit by a pitch, Jacey Schuler came on in relief with the bases loaded and one out. She got the second out on a fielder's choice as Hannah Greer threw out pinch runner Gracelyn Sol at the plate, but a two-out single plated two to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Maryland opened the scoring action in the top of the third Anna McGowan singled into left field scoring Sammi Woods. Cassady would get a strikeout to end the inning and strand two Terrapins on base.
Michigan State's best scoring opportunities came in the bottom of the third and fifth innings. In the bottom of the third, Payton Conroy reached on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved over to third on a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning. Kirsten Caravaca grounded into a fielder's choice to the shortstop Woods, who fired home to get Conroy at the plate.
The Spartans had a bases loaded opportunity in the bottom of the fifth with two outs when Bernard, Caravaca and Sydney Doloszycki all walked to reach and load the bases. Hannah Hawley battled to a full count but popped out to Woods in shallow left center field, who had an over the shoulder basket catch to end the inning.
The rubber match of the series comes on Sunday at Secchia Stadium, with a 12 noon first pitch.

- Michigan State held its alumni game on Saturday and honored its 1976 AIAW National Championship team in a pregame ceremony. The honorary first pitch was thrown out by MSU Hall-of-Famer and former head coach Gloria Becksford, who pitched the Spartans to that national championship. Eight members of that team, along with head coach Diane Ulibarri, made it back to East Lansing for the anniversary celebration.
- Among alumni on hand was 2020 graduate Katelyn Hendershott, who is now an assistant coach at Maryland. She played three years for MSU after transferring from Lake Superior State when the Lakers disbanded their program.
- Carsyn Cassady tallied her career-high 70th strikeout of the season. She allowed just two hits in 6.1 innings of work.
- Sydney Doloszycki went 1-for-2 with a walk and a first inning double.
- Hannah Hawley walked twice and moved her streak of reaching base safely to six consecutive games. Her 26 free passes is tied for second on the team with classmate Britain Beshears. Zoie Bernard leads the squad with 29, including one on Saturday to extend her streak of reaching base safely to four games.
