EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State hockey senior forward Charlie Stramel and junior goaltender Trey Augustine were each selected as Top Ten finalists for the 2026 Hobey Baker Memorial Award on Wednesday afternoon.
It marks the fourth time in program history that Michigan State has produced multiple finalists in the same season, following Mike York and Chad Alban in 1998, Kip Miller and Bobby Reynolds in 1989, and Craig Simpson and Kelly Miller in 1985.
Joining Stramel and Augustine in the Top Ten are: James Hagens (Boston College), T.J. Hughes (Michigan), Gavin McKenna (Penn State), Max Plante (Minnesota-Duluth), Erik Pohlkamp (Denver), Hayden Stavroff (Dartmouth), Felix Trudeau (Sacred Heart) and Ethan Wyttenbach (Quinnipiac). Michigan State is the only program to produce multiple finalists this season.
Finalists were selected by voting from all 64 Division I college hockey head coaches and online fan balloting. This year's Hobey Baker winner will be chosen from this group by the 30-member Selection Committee as well as an additional round of fan balloting. Criteria for the award are - displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, strength of character on and off the ice, sportsmanship, and scholastic achievements.
The Hobey Hat Trick (three finalists) will be announced on April 2, 2026, and the Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced on Friday, April 10, 2026, during the Frozen Four weekend in Las Vegas.
Stramel enters the NCAA tournament next week, ranking No. 1 nationally in game-winning goals (7), No. 2 in faceoffs won (461), No. 11 in points per game (1.26), No. 19 in goals per game (0.54) and No. 21 in assists per game (0.71). He was a key reason why Michigan State's offense ranked No. 6 nationally with 3.75 goals per game, and why MSU's penalty kill unit led the Big Ten during conference play (.802).
A power forward with a 200-ft game, Stramel is having the best season of his career as a senior with a career-best 44 points through 35 games on 19 goals and 25 assists, nearly doubling his career point total in his final season. Stramel was a First Team All-Big Ten selection alongside Augustine and teammates Porter Martone and Matt Basgall, while also earning Most Valuable Player honors at the Great Lakes Invitational. An alternate captain this season, Stramel leads Michigan State with a +30 +/-. His breakout performance came outdoors at Beaver Stadium where he tallied three goals (including the overtime game-winner) and an assist against then No. 5-ranked Penn State in front of 70,000+ fans.
Augustine became the second ever two-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year on Wednesday and enters the NCAA tournament next week ranked No. 6 nationally in save percentage (.929), No. 5 in winning percentage (.734) and No. 11 in goals against average (2.09). With Augustine in net the Spartan scoring defense rank No. 4 in the country and MSU's penalty kill unit led all Big Ten programs in conference action (.802). Augustine led all Big Ten goaltenders in wins (23), goals against average and save percentage.
Known for being calm in the chaos of the crease, Augustine is a Mike Richter Award semifinalist for the third consecutive season and previously earned First Team AHCA All-America honors in addition to being named an AHCA/Krampade All-American Scholar (2025). Augustine has been the backbone of Michigan State's three consecutive Big Ten regular season championships, owning a career record of 16-6-2 against Top 5 ranked opponents and a 36-18-2 record against ranked opponents overall. His 65 career victories are tied for the most in DI men's hockey among active goaltenders, with Augustine having played in 16 fewer contests than his counterpart with eight fewer losses and seven fewer ties. Augustine's 2763 career saves are third among active goaltenders and his .922 career save percentage ranks fifth among active goaltenders with more than 1000 career shots faced.
