EAST LANSING, Mich. - For the first time, the Michigan State will travel to Eugene, Oregon for the Big Ten Track & Field Championships held at historic Hayward Field, as the University of Oregon hosts the championship May 16-18.
Last season, the Michigan State men accumulated 61 points across the weekend, which was the most for the program in 15 years, scoring 62 in 2009. The women tallied 25 points across the three-day meet to finish in 10th. On the final day of the championships there was a stretch of nine of 10 consecutive events in which a Spartan reached the podium.
Michigan State returns several athletes who scored in last year’s Big Ten Championship in Ann Arbor, Michigan. While neither Ryan Talbot (decathlon) nor Lauren Freeland (1500m) are back to defend their Big Ten titles, the Spartans will have a strong squad in contention for titles, including Dalton DeDeau (Discus), Kaitlyn Hynes (10,000m) and Sophia Lucki (3,000m steeplechase).
Andrew Nolan, who finished second in the 3,000m steeplechase last season, is looking to improve on that performance this season. Nolan set the school record in the steeplechase earlier this season with a time of 8:40.95 at the Virginia Challenge. Kate Stewart-Barnett has also been outstanding in the steeplechase this season with a personal best time of 9:36.96 at the Raleigh Relays.
Action on the track begins on Friday at 12 p.m. (PT)/ 3 p.m. (ET) with the men’s decathlon 100m with MSU’s Dylan Terryberry in action. Last season, Ryan Talbot won the decathlon. In field action, the meet will begin at 12 p.m. (PT)/ 3 p.m. (ET) with the men’s hammer throw. Joshua DeVries has been the top Spartan in the hammer this season with a personal-best throw of 65.52m.
Day one action will end with the men’s and women’s 10,000m races. The men’s race will be first at 8:05 p.m. (PT)/11:05 p.m. (ET), while the women will end the night at 8:45 p.m. (PT)/11:45 p.m. (ET).
On Saturday, both the decathlon and the heptathlon will conclude, along with several prelim races on the track. The men’s and women’s steeplechases will end the second night of competition. Once again, the men will start at 6:52 p.m. (PT)/9:52 p.m. (ET). Saturday will see finals for men’s javelin, men’s shot put, women’s long jump and women’s discus.
Sunday will be full of finals, beginning with the 4x100m relays and ending with the 4x400m relays. In the field events, there will be finals in the women’s javelin, men’s and women’s triple jump, women’s pole vault, women’s high jump, men’s discus and women’s shot put.
