EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State softball was upended in a mid-week intrastate battle against Central Michigan on Wednesday night, 4-0, at Secchia Stadium. Freshman Carsyn Cassady turned in a career-best pitching effort in relief striking out a season-high five batters over 5.2 innings with no runs allowed.
MSU moves to 9-16 on the season while CMU improves to 11-15. The Spartans are back in action this weekend for a three-game road series against Michigan on March 28-30. First pitch on Friday, March 28 is set for 5:00 p.m. from Alumni Field.
Freshman Jacey Schuler (5-9) started in the circle for the Spartans before Cassady entered from the bullpen in the second inning. Cassady came into the game with the bases loaded in the second, striking out a pair of batters to strand all three runners.
Michigan State got two hits from sophomore Kendall Smiley, who leads the team in multi-hit performances this season with seven. Junior Hannah Hawley singled and walked to reach base twice. Juniors Sydney Doloszycki and Kaelin Cash also reached for the Spartans on Wednesday.
Central Michigan scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead before adding an insurance run in the second frame. Chippewa starting pitcher Brooklyn Compau (4-4) struck out five in a complete game effort.
