Softball Knocks Off Receiving Votes Omaha

SAN ANTONIO – Freshman Jacey Schuler earned her first career complete game shutout in Michigan State's 3-0 victory over receiving votes Omaha on Sunday in the final game of the 2025 Roadrunner Classic.
MSU improves to 4-8 while handing the Mavericks (11-2) just their second loss of the season. The Spartans won't be back in action until March 7-9 in Oxford, Ohio for a pair of two-game series against Miami (Ohio) and Northern Kentucky.
Schuler (4-2) took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning, completing 4.2 hitless innings before an Omaha single up the middle ended her streak. Schuler struck out five, allowing just three hits and two walks in the complete game effort.
Junior Hannah Hawley provided the offense in Sunday's win, with her fifth inning three-run home run proving to be the difference. Hawley was 2-for-3 at the plate joining junior Kaelin Cash for a multi-hit effort. Sophomore Kendall Smiley and junior Sydney Doloszycki also tallied base knocks for the Spartans.
Both starting pitchers battled to a 0-0 tie through four innings as it appeared the game was headed towards a classic pitcher's duel. Schuler got herself out of danger twice in the early innings stranding a pair of Maverick baserunners in the first and second frames with inning ending strikeouts. The Antioch, Ill. native retired eight straight batters, with 1-2-3 third and fourth innings before Omaha recorded its first base hit of the game with two down in the fifth.
Michigan State broke the 0-0 tie when Hawley sent her third home run of the season over the right center field fence. Freshman Natalia Kenyatta reached on a hit by pitch and Smiley took first on a Maverick throwing error to set Hawley up. MSU looked to do more damage in the fifth following Hawley's blast, loading the bases with two outs, but a fly out to center ended the Spartan threat.
Down to its final three outs, Omaha put two runners on base in the seventh inning, but Schuler induced two first-pitch outs to end the game.
