2/20/2025 8:03:00 PM | Softball
SAN ANTONIO – Play at the 2025 Roadrunner Classic got underway for Michigan State softball on Thursday afternoon, falling to host UTSA (7-4) and Akron (2-1) on day one of the tournament at Roadrunner Field.
Thursday's results move MSU's record to 3-7 to start the 2025 campaign.
Friday's previously scheduled contests against St. Thomas and Omaha have been canceled due to a cold weather advisory in the San Antonio area. In a change of events, MSU will now travel to Incarnate Word for a 2:00 p.m. ET game on Saturday, February 22. Sunday morning's game against Omaha is unchanged. Any further schedule changes this weekend will be communicated via the Michigan State softball social media channels.
Game One – UTSA 7, Michigan State 4
Fielding errors were the difference in game one with six Spartan errors leading to five Roadrunner runs.
Senior Faith Guidry (0-3) started in the circle for MSU allowing six runs (two earned) over 3.2 innings and striking out three. Guidry was relieved by senior Madison Taylor who allowed one run (none earned) over the final 2.1 innings of work. Taylor struck out four UTSA batters and allowed just one hit in relief.
MSU got a multi-hit performance from senior Jenae Wash who went 2-for-3 at the plate. Six different Spartans tallied hits, and all nine starters reached base by hit, walk or fielder's choice. Senior Collette Allen's fourth inning home run tied the game at 4-4 and provided her with a team-best two RBI in game one.
Junior Kaelin Cash and junior Sydney Doloszycki recorded extra base hits with a home run and double, respectively. Cash's fourth inning solo shot was her first of the season and first wearing the Green & White.
A first inning double down the left field line by Doloszycki provided the Spartans with a 1-0 lead, but UTSA quickly responded with a pair of runs in the home half following a series of MSU throwing errors. A two-out Spartan error in the third extended the Roadrunners lead to 4-1.
Cash's lead-off home run in the top of the fourth cut the deficit to two before Allen's home run of the two-run variety tied the game at 4-4 and looked to swing momentum in Michigan State's favor.
UTSA got two runs on back-to-back two out singles in the home half of the fourth and added an insurance run in the fifth to claim a 7-4 advantage.
Michigan State threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs, but could not push a run across. Allen and sophomore Hannah Greer drew walks before a single up the middle by Wash put three on base.
Game Two – Akron 2, Michigan State 1
In game two, freshman Jacey Schuler (3-2) provided another strong showing in the circle throwing her second career complete game in a two run (one earned) effort. Schuler struck out three with no walks, allowing eight Zips hits.
Sophomore Kendall Smiley led the Spartans with a pair of base knocks, and junior Britain Beshears provided the offense with a lead-off home run in the sixth inning. Freshman Natalia Kenyatta made her first career start at second base, tallying her first collegiate hit in the seventh with a lead-off double.
Senior Collette Allen reached base twice with a single and walk, while junior Hannah Hawley also singled.
Akron struck early scoring on a first inning throwing error during a sacrifice bunt attempt. Schuler managed danger well throughout the remainder of the inning stranding three Akron baserunners to keep it a one run game.
Schuler went on to throw three consecutive scoreless innings in the circle, stranding two Zips baserunners in the fifth. Michigan State loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth, but a fly out ended the Spartan threat.
Akron extended its lead to 2-0 in the home half on a two-out double to left center.
Beshears broke through for the MSU offense to lead off the sixth, slugging her third home run of the season and the 19th of her career over the right field fence. The Novi, Michigan native is one long ball away from reaching the program's career Top 10 list.
Down to the final three outs, Kenyatta laced a lead-off double to right center in the seventh to try and spark the MSU offense. Sophomore Hannah Greer, who walked earlier in the contest, successfully sacrificed Kenyatta to third, but back-to-back outs to second base ended the game.
