Spartans douse Flames, 7-0, to post second sweep in last three matches.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State women's tennis team ran its win streak to six-straight with a Sunday sweep at Liberty, 7-0, at LU's Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans improved to 6-2 on the season, and won their second sweep in the last three matches after blanking Eastern Michigan, 4-0, on Feb. 2, with a 4-1 Victory for MSU over James Madison on Friday night in between. Liberty slides to 3-5 with the loss.
With Sunday's win, MSU and Liberty are now tied at 1-1 in the all-time series. The visiting teams won both match-ups after Liberty was victorious, 4-2, during the 2022-23 season in hosting the Flames in the only other previous meeting.
The six-match win streak is the Spartans' second streak of six wins in a row in the last four seasons, also winning six in a row during the 2021-22 season.
Starting off with doubles, redshirt-sophomore Oriana Parkins-Godwin and junior Issey Purser battled Liberty's Yu-Yun Chen and Celina Joseph, with the No. 3 doubles Spartan duo falling, 6-2.
MSU countered with junior Matilde Morais and redshirt-sophomore Hanna Tsitavets at No. 2 doubles, and the Green & White pair topped LU's Anika Lemus and Yoanna Radulova, 6-2.
That left the doubles point to be decided between MSU's No. 1 doubles tandem of senior Liisa Vehviläinen and freshman Ellie Blackford and Liberty's Daniella O'Neill and Maria Turchetto, and the Spartans won the tight match, 6-4, to secure the doubles point.
Shifting to singles, Purser kept the momentum train rolling down the tracks by routing LU's Sadie Daavettila 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot, putting MSU ahead, 2-0.
Just like her teammate, Brahmbhatt also wasted little time in dispatching her Flames' opponent at No. 4 singles, tangling with Maria Turchetto, and Brahmbhatt won by a quick, 6-1, 6-0 score.
Tsitavets topped LU's Anika Lemus in a 6-4, 6-3 score at No. 5 singles, securing the Victory for MSU at 4-0.
Blackford matched Tsitavets' score with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 2 singles over Yoanna Radulova of Liberty.
At No. 3 singles, Morais needed bonus tennis to top Liberty's Yu-Yun Chen 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5).
Vehviläinen also fought to a gritty third-set win, defeating Daniella O'Neill of LU, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7), completing the Spartan sweep.
After a bye weekend last week, and this weekend's two matches away from home, Michigan State returns home to host a doubleheader with Youngstown State and Ball State on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center. MSU opens against YSU at 10 a.m. before returning to the court at 2 p.m. to battle BSU. Youngstown State and Ball State will meet on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. in a neutral court match.
