#3/3 Hockey Knocks Off #1/1 Michigan on the Road

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 3/3-ranked Michigan State went on the road and knocked off top-ranked Michigan on Saturday night, defeating the Wolverines 3-1 from Yost Ice Arena to earn the series split.
"Heck of a response from our group," said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. "You look at Friday's game; it was a pretty low event game. I thought both teams played well defensively, they did a better job for sure, we weren't on the inside enough and we needed to be a little more determined offensively, and we saw that in the first period (tonight) we got to our game. For our guys, the way it went on Friday, to have the first period we did (tonight) and be down 1-0, to stick with it and not chase being someone other than ourselves. A couple big time goals by (Anthony Romani) Romes and Trey (Augustine) did a heck of a job in there for us."
Michigan State improves to 12-4-0 overall and 5-3 in conference action, while Michigan falls to 16-4-0 and 7-3 in Big Ten play. The Spartans will return to action on December 28-29 in Grand Rapids, Michigan for the 59th Great Lakes Invitational where they'll take on Ferris State and either Michigan Tech/Miami (Ohio).
The Spartans out-shot Michigan 33-31 and went 4-for-5 on the penalty kill. Junior goaltender Trey Augustine made 30 saves in goal, good for a .968 save percentage. Augustine made 27 saves over the final two periods.
MSU got a pair of goals from freshman Anthony Romani and freshman Porter Martone sealed it with an empty net goal late in the third period. Six different Spartans posted assists with junior Patrick Geary, senior Charlie Stramel, junior Gavin O'Connell, sophomore Colin Ralph, senior Travis Shoudy and freshman Cayden Lindstrom earning points.
How It Happened
Both sides got most of their offense from power play chances in the first period with Michigan capitalizing to take a 1-0 lead at the 12:17 mark. MSU had more chances overall in the period however, out-shooting Michigan 17-4, including a shot by freshman Ryker Lee that went off the pipe late in the period.
Teams started the second period 4-on-4 after a late whistle with under a minute to play in the first. Momentum swung towards the Spartans in the final minutes of the second period with six shots on goal over the final 3:30. Romani broke through for Michigan State with 1:16 remaining, scoring on a rebound to tie the game at 1-1. Geary put the puck on net and Romani was there to clean it up.
Romani's second goal of the night gave MSU a 2-1 lead just 1:44 into the third period, going five-hole on the Wolverine goaltender. Lindstrom dropped the puck off for Romani, who took the puck to the slot untouched before finding space between the goaltender's legs. Augustine made a flurry of saves in quick succession after Michigan pulled its goaltender with under 2:00 in regulation, stonewalling three shots on goal in under 20 seconds. Martone iced the game with an empty netter just moments later to put Michigan State ahead 3-1 with 1:09 to play.
