
Volleyball Takes Down Oregon to Complete 2-0 Road Weekend

EUGENE, Ore. -Â Michigan State volleyball used a gritty performance to take down Oregon in five sets (23-25, 25-16, 25-21, 21-25, 16-14) Saturday afternoon inside Oregon's Matthew Knight Arena.Â
MSU improves to 18-6 overall (8-6 Big Ten) with the win and has now totaled the most wins in a season since 2017 (24-9) with six matches still remaining. Oregon falls to 14-10 overall and 5-9 in the conference with the loss. With their win at Washington on Friday night, MSU went 2-0 in B1G road matches for the first time this season.Â
The Spartans hit .208 for the match to Oregon's .102 clip and led in kills (55-to-53) and total blocks (13-12). The Ducks held a 9-6 advantage in service aces, while each team posted 57 digs.Â
Freshman outside hitter Bianca Mumcular led MSU in kills with 12 and hit .296 for the match. Junior outside hitter Taylah Holdem posted 11 kills, while junior outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska and junior middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig each added nine. Kulig's nine kills came on a .533 clip, recording just one error on 15 attempts. She also led the Spartans with a season-high eight blocks. Â
Junior libero Lia Schneider recorded a team-best 20 kills for the second-straight match and was one of five Spartans to record a service ace alongside redshirt freshman setter Malayah Long, junior setter Cam Berger and sophomore defensive specialist Carmen Waye. Holdem led the team with two service aces.Â
Long and Berger posted 25 and 24 assists, respectively.Â
After a back-and-forth start to the first set, a pair of Oregon attack errors gave MSU an early two-point lead at 7-5 before the Ducks used a four-point swing to take a two-point lead of their own at 9-8. Mumcular and Waye kills tied the set back up at 10-10 before an MSU error and Oregon kill gave the Ducks the lead by a pair again, but MSU tied the set at 13-13 and again at 14-14 with Doezema and Staniszewska kills. Oregon then took a one-point lead at the media timeout, 15-14, after an MSU service error. After an Oregon service ace out of the timeout, MSU rattled off three-straight points with kills from Staniszewska and Mumcular and a Berger service ace to take a one-point lead at 17-16 before the Ducks responded with a 3-0 run of their own to force an MSU timeout at 19-17. An MSU error gave the Ducks a 20-17 lead out of the timeout, but two Mumcular kills, a block from Mumcular and Kulig and an Oregon attack error gave the Spartans a one-point advantage at 21-20. Oregon followed with another 3-0 run to retake the lead at 23-21 and force an MSU timeout. A kill from Holdem and a block from Mumcular and Waye out of the timeout tied the set at 23-23, but two Oregon points after calling a timeout gave the Ducks the first set, 25-23.Â
MSU used a 4-0 run in the second to take an early 6-3 lead after kills from Doezema, Holdem and a block from Waye and Doezema. The Ducks got within a pair after two kills, but MSU followed with a Staniszewska kill and back-to-back Kulig and Doezema blocks to force an Oregon timeout at 10-5. Oregon got back within three at 13-10 and again at 14-11, but three-straight Duck errors helped the Spartans to an 18-12 lead to force an Oregon timeout. The Spartans took advantage of a myriad of Oregon errors in the following points, getting to set point at 24-15 with a Kulig kill before a Duck error ended the second, 25-16.Â
The Spartans took a 5-2 in the third set with four-straight points off of kills from Holdem and Doezema, a Holdem service ace and Staniszewska block and forced an Oregon timeout after taking a five-point lead at 10-5 with a Staniszewska and Kulig block and kills from Kulig and Mumcular. MSU maintained its lead throughout the following points and used a 5-1 run with four Duck errors and a Bolton service ace to take its largest lead of the set at six points at 21-15 to force an Oregon timeout. The Ducks responded with three-straight points out of the timeout to force the Spartans into a timeout of their own at 21-18, but a Mumcular kill and Long service ace extended the MSU lead back to 23-18. A block from Holdem and Waye got the Spartans to set point at 24-19 before back-to-back Duck kills closed the gap to three points at 24-21 to force an MSU timeout. Doezema ended the set with a kill out of the timeout, 25-21.Â
MSU took a timeout after the Ducks scored four-straight points to take a 5-1 lead in the fourth set. Oregon extended its lead to five out of the timeout at 8-3 before the Spartans used a Staniszewska kill, four Oregon attack errors and a Schneider service ace to take a one-point lead at 9-8. MSU took a two-point lead at 12-10 with kills from Berger and Holdem, but Oregon used a 5-0 run to take a three-point lead at 15-12 and force a Spartan timeout. Oregon led by as much as four at 18-14 before two Duck attack errors, a Holdem service ace and kills from Waye and Doezema propeled the Spartans to a 5-0 run and one-point advantage at 19-18. The Ducks closed the set on a 7-2 run to take the fourth set, 25-21.Â
Oregon took an 8-7 at the media timeout before a Doezema kill and Oregon attack error gave MSU a one-point lead at 9-8. The Ducks tied the set back up with a kill, but MSU followed with a Staniszewska kill and Duck attack error to take a two-point advantage at 11-9 and force an Oregon timeout. Oregon responded with a kill out of a timeout to get within a pair before a Staniszewska and Kulig block extended the MSU lead back to three at 13-10. A kill and block from the Ducks forced an MSU timeout at 13-12 and the Oregon got to match point at 14-13 with a kill and MSU attack error, but Mumcular's 12th kill fought off the point to tie the set at 14-14. An Oregon attack error got the Spartans to match point before a second Oregon error sealed the set for MSU, 16-14.Â
