NOTES TO KNOW:
• Michigan State skated to a 4-0 exhibition victory over Windsor on Friday, Oct. 3 at Munn Ice Arena. Porter Martone, Tommi Mannisto, Charlie Stramel and Ryker Lee tallied goals for the Spartans. Trey Augustine and Melvin Strahl made a combined 23 saves for the shutout.
• MSU was selected atop the Big Ten Preseason Coaches Poll for the second consecutive season. The Spartans were followed in the poll by Penn State, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Notre Dame.
• Two Spartans were selected to the 2025-26 Preseason All-Big Ten First Team. Trey Augustine and Matt Basgall were selected as returning 2024-25 First Team All-Big Ten selections.
• Augustine returns for his third season in net for Michigan State, coming off a season in which he was a First Team AHCA All-American and the 2024-25 Big Ten Goaltender of the Year. Last season Augustine posted career-best tallies of 2.08 GAA on a .924 Sv%. He was a finalist for the Mike Richter Award presented to the nation's top goaltender.
• Basgall, a senior defenseman, is one of three Spartans to play in every game (113) of Adam Nightingale's tenure as head coach joining Daniel Russell and Tiernan Shoudy. Basgall was a Second Team AHCA All-American and a finalist for Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year during his junior campaign. He posted career-bests in goal (6), assists (20), points (26) and +/- (+9) in 2024-25. His 0.70 points per game ranked second among B1G defensemen last season.
• Both Augustine and Basgall were named College Sports Communicators Academic All-Americans. Augustine was named to the first team, becoming the first Spartan to earn first team honors since Jeff Lerg in 2009. Basgall was a third team honoree.
• Michigan State moved up one spot in the rankings this week to No. 2 in both the USA Hockey and USCHO.com polls. The Spartans concluded last season as the No. 6-ranked team in both national polls.
• The Spartans return 14 letterwinners from a year ago while welcoming a much-anticipated class of 13 newcomers.
• Matt Basgall was selected as the program's 80th captain and will wear the "C" on his chest this season. Basgall's assistant captains are senior Charlie Stramel, senior Tiernan Shoudy and junior Patrick Geary. Shoudy is wearing the "A" for the second-straight season while Stramel and Geary are first-time captains.
