Softball Outlasted in Pitcher’s Duel

EAST LANSING, Mich. – In an old-fashioned pitcher's duel, Rutgers broke a scoreless seventh inning tie to defeat Michigan State, 3-0, on Friday afternoon in game one of the three-game series at Secchia Stadium. Senior Liv Grey (10-13) started in the circle and took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning.
MSU moves to 16-29 (3-15 B1G) on the season while Rutgers improves to 30-19 (11-7 B1G) heading into the weekend.
Grey's no-hit bid ended in the top of the sixth, surrendering her first hit of the contest with one out in the frame. It was a return to form for Grey who struck out six, allowing four hits and three runs (one earned) over 6.1 innings of work. Senior Ashlyn Roberts came on to pitch in relief, striking out one in a clean two-thirds of an inning.
Sophomore Hannah Hawley and seniors Anna Fox, Collette Allen and Alexis Ross recorded hits for the Spartans on Friday. Junior Macy Lee, sophomore Britain Beshears and Fox drew walks.
Michigan State left six runners on base including two runners in scoring position in each of the second and fourth innings.
Grey's no-hit bid could have ended much sooner, but a diving catch in right field by sophomore Sydney Doloszycki prevented a hit in the first inning. After a first inning walk, Grey retired nine-straight batters before a hit by pitch ended her streak. She would retire the next five before allowing her first hit of the game in the sixth on a single to right.
The Scarlet Knights found their footing in the seventh after a lead-off walk, a passed ball and an error led to the first run of the contest. From there a trio of singles plated two additional Rutgers runs before Roberts entered to pitch in relief. Roberts earned a strikeout of Scarlet Knight shortstop Kyleigh Sand, who is one of the toughest players to strike out in the B1G, entering the game with just eight strikeouts on the season.
