MSU Dropped by Oakland Wednesday
3/27/2024 9:18:00 PM | Baseball
Bright knocks in three RBI with two-run double and solo HR.
The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second, before the Spartans clawed back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. After OU added a run in the fourth for a 6-2 advantage, MSU posted a four-run fourth to knot it up at 6-all. Oakland plated two in the seventh, two in the eighth and one more in the ninth for an 11-6 lead, before the Spartans threatened in the bottom of the ninth with a run, before the rally and the game ended with two Spartans on base.
Michigan State had 10 hits, while Oakland tallied 16 hits, but MSU pitching issued eight walks and five hit batters.
"I think if you score seven runs you should win the game. We walked eight and hit five, so 13 free base runners is a recipe for disaster," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "One of our offensive goals is to get 15 runners on base throughout the course of the game. When you get 15 guys on, you have a really good chance to win, like 90 percent winning percentage when we get 15 guys on in a game. They got 34 guys on base today. Obviously, we need to be better on the mound. The guys that come in and throw strikes and attack hitters are going to get chances to throw again, and the guys who can't find the strike zone, well it's time to kind of whittle that down and maybe go to some new guys. My patience is wearing thin for the walks, the hit batters, and behind in the count. Credit Oakland, they did a good job of exploiting that and that's why they scored 11 runs on 16 hits."
With the loss, MSU slides to 10-13 on the season, while OU moves to 10-14. Wednesday's result snapped a three-game Spartan win streak in the series, that MSU now leads, 37-5.
Junior catcher Noah Bright was 2-for-4 with three RBI, coming on a two-run double in the second inning and a solo home run to spark the rally in the fourth.
"Noah swung the bat very well today," Boss said. "He's got some power and a handful of home runs, which we don't have a whole lot of power, so anyone who gives us the chance to leave the yard certainly helps. He's swinging a pretty hot bat right now. I think both of our catchers, he and Sam Thompson, are swinging it well. Both of them give us some juice at the bottom of the order that we need."

The senior duo of outfielder Jack Frank and infielder Dillon Kark, along with junior outfielder Greg Ziegler were all 2-for-5, with Frank driving in one and scoring one run, while Kark and Ziegler had a run apiece. Junior designated hitter Christian Williams was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while sophomore infielder Randy Seymour was 1-for-4.Â
Freshman pitcher Gannon Grundman made his first collegiate start, tallying two strikeouts. Senior Harrison Cook (2 Ks), freshman Gavin Moczydlowsky (career-high 5 Ks), sophomore Nolan Higgins, junior Dominic Pianto, freshman Jaxon Huffman (2 Ks) and freshman Garrett Brewer (1 K) rounded out the rotation.
The Golden Grizzlies erupted out of the gates with a 5-run second inning, before the Spartans got some runs back with two runs in the home half of the second stanza, on Bright's two-run double to right, Bright drove in Seymour, who doubled to spark the two-out rally, and Ziegler, who knocked an infield single.
OU plated a single run in the fourth to open its 6-2 lead.

Bright ignited the comeback with a solo home run blast to left, then freshman outfielder Landen Lozier walked and Kark singled. Frank followed with an RBI single to right, plating Lozier. After an OU pitching change, Kark scored on a balk, and freshman infielder Ryan McKay later knocked an RBI groundout to drive in Frank and tie it up, 6-6.
Oakland added two runs in each of the seventh and eighth frames, and one more in the ninth for an 11-6 advantage.
Junior infielder Nick Williams got the ninth-inning Spartan rally going with a a walk and McKay reached on an error by his OU counterpart at second. C.Williams followed by lacing an RBI single to right to plate N.Williams, but the rally and the game came to a close without anymore Spartan runs.
