MSU forces extras with run in the ninth and score one in top of 10th before overtaken by UMD.
The Spartans were making their first visit to College Park since 2017 and had their two-game overall winning streak halted with the loss, sliding to 8-11 overall and starting 0-1 in B1G action. Maryland, which entered the week among others receiving votes in the national rankings, won its fourth in a row and seventh in the last eight in improving to 17-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Friday was the fourth-straight meeting between MSU and UMD that has been decided by one run, as part of a total of 11 of the 17 total meetings being determined by two runs or less, as the Terps now lead the all-time series, 11-6.
MSU scored three runs in its first at bat with four doubles in the inning part of five hits for an early 3-0. UMD plated a run in the second, before taking the lead at 4-3 with three runs in the fourth and added another run in the fifth for a 5-3 advantage. The Spartans closed to 5-4 in the seventh and tied it at 5-all in the ninth on a two-out RBI single by graduate catcher Sam Thompson. MSU took a 6-5 lead in the top of the 10th when senior infielder Dillon Kark scored on a wild pitch. However, the Terps loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th and Brayden Martin laced a two-run single down the right field line to drive in the winning run.
"I'm really proud of our guys for their grit and effort tonight. We were ready to play to day and to put up a big number in the first was fun to watch," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "We're disappointed that we kind of let that slip away, but I'm proud of them for clawing back and tying it in the ninth and for taking a lead in the 10th, and it's just unfortunate the way the game ended in the 10th.
Senior outfielder Jack Frank was 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, knocking a two-run ground-rule double in the first, and later coming in to score on junior designated hitter Christian Williams' RBI double.
Thompson finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, belting his first HR of the season in the seventh. Redshirt-sophomore infielder Randy Seymour was also 2-for-4, while freshman outfielder Landen Lozier was 2-for-5 with a run scored, knocking a double to leadoff the game. Kark was 1-for-4 with two runs scored, following Lozier with a double of his own in the opening frame. C.Williams was 1-for-4 with the aforementioned RBI double.
Sophomore starting pitcher Joseph Dzierwa went 4.0 IP with five strikeouts, spraying eight hits and four runs, yielding three walks. Freshman reliever Logan Pikur went 1.0 IP, before junior reliever Noah Matheny went 4.0 IP with five Ks and no hits or runs. Sophomore Tommy Szczepanski pitched the 10th, ringing up a strikeout, before Maryland mounted its rally for the win.
"Noah Matheny was really, really good today on the mound. Jack Frank had a big day at the plate, Randy Seymour had a nice day at the plate, and Sam Thompson came up with a huge RBI to put us in a really good position in the ninth," Boss said "So we're disappointed in how the game ended, but proud of our guys for playing hard and playing well. Maryland is a good ballclub, so we'll have to be ready to go again tomorrow."
