EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State wrestling will compete in dual meet action for the first time in nearly a month this weekend when it takes on Cal State Bakersfield on the road at 2 PM ET on Sunday, December 15. Sunday's dual will stream via the CSU Bakersfield Athletics YouTube channel with live results on TrackWrestling.
"This weekend is a great opportunity for some of our guys to wrestle in front of friends and family back home for the first time in their careers," said Michigan State head coach Roger Chandler. Looking forward to another tough dual to test our team before Big Ten duals get started next month."
The First Whistle
The Spartans are 2-0 in dual meets this season owning wins over American (20-12) and Ohio (22-19). This weekend marks the first time that MSU has competed in the state of California since 1979 when it met CSU Bakersfield, Fresno State, Cal Poly, Cal State Stanislaus and San Jose State in the same week.
Michigan State is 0-2 all-time against CSU Bakersfield dating back to 1978 when the Spartans were defeated 29-12 in the first ever meeting before losing 25-17 in 1979. Two of Michigan State's projected starters, Tristan Lujan and Ceasar Garza, hail from the state of California, which has been an area of recruiting focus for the Spartans during the Roger Chandler era.
Entering this weekend MSU has won 24 straight non-conference duals dating back to 2020.
First Look: Cal State Bakersfield
Cal State Bakersfield is led by sixth year head coach Luke Smith, who was previously an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan before the program was dissolved. Smith was a four-time NCAA qualifier at Central Michigan.
CSUB is 0-2 in duals this season falling Utah Valley (25-15) and Stanford (29-12).
Two Roadrunners are ranked by FloWrestling with former NCAA champion AJ Ferrari ranked #4 and heavyweight Jake Andrews ranked #27. Ferrari is ranked #1 at 197 pounds by InterMat.
CSU Bakersfield is ranked No. 20 in InterMat's tournament rankings and No. 28 in FloWrestling's tournament rankings.
Former Purdue Boilermaker and Oklahoma Sooner Gerrit Nijenhuis is a familiar face in the CSUB lineup, an NCAA qualifier in 2021, 22 and 23. Nijenhuis bumped up to 184 pounds last weekend at the Cliff Keen Invitational.
