MSU Drops 2-0 Decision at Rutgers

East Lansing, Mich, -- Michigan State fell 2-0 at Rutgers on Friday afternoon in Big Ten action. MSU falls to 7-7 and 0-4 in Big Ten play, and Rutgers is now 5-7 and 2-4 in Conference action.
The home team scored the first goal of the game at 9:37 when Ava Cickavage collected the ball outside the circle, moved to the right and into the shooting area, and her shot went to the left side for Sophie Kuiper to tip home her second goal of the season. The keepers were both active and kept it a 1-0 game at the half, with Rutgers holding a 5-3 advantage in attempts and each team with two saves.
Rutgers did a good job defensively in the second half, limiting MSU to just one shot in the final 30 minutes. The Scarlet Knights took a 1-0 lead just over nine minutes into the game, and then sealed it with just over eight remaining in regulation - Paulina Nicklaus converted a penalty stroke for her fourth goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.
Lyra Gavino made a total of five saves for the Spartans, while Sophia Howard made two stops for Rutgers. Freshman Lilian Knorr had three of MSU's four shots on the day. The home team had a slim 2-1 lead in penalty corners in addition to its 10-4 advantage in shot attempts.
MSU is in action again on Sunday when it travels to Penn State to complete a three-game road swing.
