EAST LANSING, Mich. – On a beautiful fall Friday afternoon at Ralph Young Field under sunny skies and temperatures in the high-70s, the Michigan State field hockey team fell to sixth-ranked Maryland on Senior Day, 3-1.
The Spartans (6-6, 0-3 Big Ten) battled the Terrapins and held a 1-0 lead late into the third quarter, but Maryland (8-3, 4-1 Big Ten) rallied for two late goals in the third and one in the fourth in the 3-1 victory.
"We knew Maryland was a really good team, and we knew we were really going to have to play disciplined and stay with our game plan," said MSU head coach Helen Knull. "I think their second goal took the wind out of our sails, but overall, I'm really proud of the effort today, and I'm proud that we stuck to our game plan for four quarters, even when things weren't going our way. As I told the girls after the game, this is our standard going forward, because we have plenty of Big Ten (games) still to play."
Although Maryland had a 5-0 advantage in corners and 6-1 in shots in the first quarter, the Spartans scored the first goal with just 1:49 left in the opening period to take a 1-0 lead. Maddie Lawlor found herself open on the far-left of the circle and blasted the ball toward the middle, where freshman Lilian Knorr knocked it past Terrapin goal keeper Alyssa Klebasko for Knorr's third goal of the season.
After a scoreless second quarter, the Spartans continued to maintain a 1-0 advantage until late in the third quarter; however, the Terrapin offense scored two late goals in the final 2:15 of the third to go up, 2-1. Freshman Ella Gaitan scored both goals for the Terrapins.
On the first goal, Maryland's Hope Rose connected on a shot off of a penalty corner, which was saved by Spartan goal keeper Lyra Gavino, but Gaitan was there for the deflection to get the Terps on the board. Gaitan's second goal was tipped in on a shot from the center.
Gavino finished the game with seven saves for MSU.
The Terrapins added to their lead with an early goal in the fourth quarter as Fleur Knopert scored her first goal of the season with 11:41 remaining to make the final 3-1.
Prior to the game, Michigan State recognized its Senior Class: Jillian Bonczewski, Emma O'Neill, Ellie Rutherford and Ellie Wheatley.
"They are the heartbeat of our program and I think everybody looks up to them," said Knull. "We're going to really miss them after this year. It was a great celebration today having their families in town and just getting to recognize what they have done in their careers. We still have hockey to play, so that's the fun part."
