TAMPA, Fla. – Michigan State softball dropped a pair of games at the USF Invitational on Saturday, falling 3-1 to #5/5 Clemson and 6-1 to South Florida.
The Spartans fall to 6-7 on the season heading into the weekend finale against Clemson on Sunday morning.
Game One - #5/5 Clemson 3, Michigan State 1
Spartan Stats
Sophomore Madison Taylor made her first career start against the Tigers, falling to 1-1 on the season. Taylor pitched a complete game, the first of her collegiate career, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits and four walks. The Fortville, Ind. Native struck out a pair.
Four Spartans found themselves in the hit column in game one, with fifth-year Jessica Mabrey, senior Kennedy Wyllie, freshman Sydney Doloszycki and junior AJ Militello all recording base knocks. Militello doubled in the second to set up redshirt junior Jenae Wash's RBI. Doloszycki scored the lone run for MSU.
The Spartans played well defensively in game one, with Mabrey making a diving grab in left to prevent a pair of runs, and freshman Bibianna Rodriguez snaring a hard-hit late inning liner to set up a double play.
Scoring Summary
Clemson put the first two runs of the game on the board in the second inning after three singles and a pair of stolen bases moved the runners around.
Michigan State halved the Tiger advantage in the home half of the second after Doloszycki came home to score on a fielder's choice. Wash hit the ball to short, but the throw home to nab Doloszycki was high and late. Militello moved Doloszycki to third after a double into the left-center gap.
Clemson increased their lead back to two after a solo homer down the left field line gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
Michigan State kept things close throughout the game, with three scoreless innings late, but Clemson tacked on one more insurance run in the seventh to secure victory.
Game Two – USF 6, Michigan State 1
Spartan Stats
Junior Ashley Miller earned the start for the Spartans, falling to 5-4 on the season after surrendering six earned runs over 5.1 innings pitched. Miller struck out five batters to surpass 400 career strikeouts. Sophomore Faith Guidry came on in relief of Miller in the sixth inning recording two outs.
Fifth-year Jessica Mabrey and junior Collette Allen each recorded a pair of hits and reached base three times for the Spartans, with Mabrey tripling in the sixth. Making her first career start for the Spartans, Allen reached with a single, a double and a walk. Junior AJ Militello recorded the lone RBI for MSU in game two.
Scoring Summary
After three scoreless innings, South Florida used a pair of doubles and three walks in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Spartans. A two-out walk loaded the bases, but the Spartans were able to get out of the jam to limit the damage.
Michigan State got on the board in the top of the sixth after a two-out single by Militello scored Doloszycki from second. Doloszycki singled with two outs and a walk by Allen moved her to second.
A South Florida grand slam in the bottom of the sixth put things out of reach for the Spartans.
