EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer saw a late lid-lifting opportunity careen off a defender's leg, and the Spartans completed a scoreless draw against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Thursday night at DeMartin Stadium.
The tie brings MSU's overall season record to 4-1-2 through the first seven contests of the season, while Oakland notches its third draw of the year and moves to 3-1-3. Michigan State recorded its fifth complete-game shutout of the season, and its first since the team's senior day win over Binghamton on Aug. 28. The Spartans are only two shutouts shy of matching the team's total of seven from the 2021 fall campaign.
In the box score, freshman midfielder Courtney Koehler led the way with a trio of shot attempts, while senior defender Bria Schrotenboer and freshman midfielder Emerson Sargeant were the only Spartans to book shots on goal with one apiece. Senior forward Lauren DeBeau saw a new season high in playing time with 77 minutes of action.
Both sides struggled to get things going early on, with MSU racking up a narrow 2-1 edge in shot attempts through the first 22nd minutes of the contest. The Green & White spent a large portion of the first half building up a dominant margin in corner kicks, but the Spartans remained in search of their first score. An aggressive play by a Golden Grizzly defender culminated in an MSU free kick by graduate defender Ruby Diodati, but her forceful attempt soared over the post in the 34th minute. Both squads battled for the remainder of the period but returned to the locker room scoreless.
Following the break, the Spartans remained dominant defensively but struggled to log solid scoring opportunities on the other end. Freshman midfielder Emerson Sargent recorded the first on-target Spartan shot of the evening in the 74th, with her attempt quickly saved by the keeper. MSU saw its best scoring opportunity of the evening come on a corner kick by Diodati. The defender's pass sailed into the goal box and found Schrotenboer, whose header zipped towards the center of the net only to be saved by Golden Grizzly fielder Sami Lopez.
Senior keeper Lauren Kozal tended goal for the Green & White once again, notching her seventh start in as many games while booking her fifth shutout of the season. Noemi Stadelmann stood watch over Oakland's net through the 66th minute and joined Kozal for the tying decision. Hayley Lindow went the rest of the way for the Golden Grizzlies and tallied a single save in 24 minutes of work.

On the team's performance Thursday night...
"There was a lack of attention to detail and effort in training yesterday. For everything that we did so well against Arkansas on Sunday, I think that we really regressed today with our effort and our execution. Attacking wise, I think that we looked like we did in our first exhibition. We hit the first defender too often, and we were too slow to get the ball off of our feet. We didn't serve dangerous balls. We were credited 15 shots and only two of those found frame. With exception of the corner kick that Bria got her head one, I'd be hard pressed to find a really good attacking moment for us. There was an overall lack of urgency from our group today. Oakland is a very good side; they are really organized. They do a good job sitting in that middle to low block, and when we did break that first line we didn't create enough."
