Women’s Soccer Hosts No. 19 Colorado
9/10/2022 1:29:00 PM | Women's Soccer
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer remains at home for its final non-conference game of the season on Sunday, Sept. 11, as the Spartans welcome 19th-ranked Colorado to Old College Field for a 1 p.m. contest.
The pregame National Anthem will include a flag presentation by the Michigan State University Army ROTC in remembrance of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
HEAD COACH JEFF HOSLER SAID…
"There's no question that Colorado is an explosive attacking team," Hosler said. "We will have to remain very organized defensively in order to provide adequate cover and support of our pressure. Ball possession and territory will be very important in this match. Much like last weekend against Arkansas, we will have to provide successful buildout moments to create overloads and send numbers towards the goal."
KICKIN' IT
The Green & White return to work following a closely contested 0-0 draw on Thursday, Sept. 8, with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The game marked the team's fifth clean sheet of the year, needing only two more shutouts to match the total set during the 2021 fall season. On Friday, Michigan State welcomed nine new members to the Athletics Hall of Fame, including women's soccer legend Laura (Heyboer) Heethuis. She was the only United Soccer Coaches All-American in program history prior to last season's selection for senior goalkeeper Lauren Kozal. Heyboer also led the way in MSU's most recent NCAA Tournament appearance in the 2009 campaign.
BATTLING THE BUFFALOES
In his ninth season as skipper in Boulder, head coach Danny Sanchez leads Colorado into its eighth game of the season boasting a 5-0-2 overall record highlighted by a 2-2 draw against then-No. 9 BYU earlier last month. The Buffaloes complete their weekend sojourn through the Great Lakes State on Sunday, having played Big Ten foe Michigan to a 1-1 draw on Thursday, Sept. 8. Junior forward Shyra James is off to a lightning-fast start in her third collegiate season, booking eight goals and 16 points through her first seven starts of the year. The goalkeeping duties are split between Bella Grust and Dani Hansen, who have 12 saves apiece while playing at least 255 minutes each.
STORY OF THE SERIES: COLORADO
Michigan State and Colorado meet for only the third time in program history on Sunday afternoon, marking the first meeting since 2018. The first meeting between the two squads came on Sept. 1, 2016, in which the Spartans recorded a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory on the road in Boulder. The only prior meeting of the two teams in East Lansing came on Sept. 9, 2018, in which the Spartans fell by a 3-0 score to the then-No. 23 Buffaloes at DeMartin Stadium. The Spartans outshot Colorado 12-10 but were unable to capitalize around the net.
