2026 Season Starts With Green & White Exhibition

East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State publicly opens its 2026 season on Wednesday evening when it hosts a Green & White Exhibition game at DeMartin Stadium (7:30 pm). Admission is free for this exhibition tilt, which serves as the first event of the 2026-27 Michigan State athletics season.Â

The Spartans, who were selected No. 1 in the Big Ten preseason poll and No. 7 in the preseason United Soccer Coaches survey, return 10 starters from a year ago when MSU posted a 15-4-6 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight. MSU has bolstered its strong corps of veterans with the No. 8-ranked recruiting class in the nation and also added some key transfers that ranked as the No. 12 portal class (both by Top Drawer Soccer.) The No. 7 preseason ranking is the highest in program history; MSU finished 2025 at No. 7 in the final postseason poll.Â

The Spartans have once again compiled one of the most challenging schedules in the nation. Five of MSU's 2026 opponents appear in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll among the top 15: No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 8 North Carolina, No. 9 UCLA, No. 12 Washington, and No. 13 Colorado; three more are among the teams receiving votes (Penn State, Xavier, and USC).

Head coach Jeff Hosler begins his sixth season in East Lansing this fall.  He owns a 70-20-20 mark in his first five campaigns, with Big Ten regular season titles in 2022 and 2023. MSU has reached the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four seasons as well as earning back-to-back Big Ten regular-season titles in 2022 and 2023.
