Field Hockey Drops B1G Road Opener at No. 6 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Michigan State field hockey (4-3, 0-2 B1G) fell to No. 6 Penn State (7-1, 2-0 B1G), 4-0, at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex Friday night.
Penn State opened the scoring six minutes into the first quarter with a goal scored by Carly Gannon. The Spartans were unable to get a shot off in the first quarter, but defended well, allowing only a single goal off Penn State's seven shots.
The Spartans' offense picked up in the second half as Michigan State created four corner opportunities. Isa van der Weij and Ellie Rutherford each recorded a pair of shots in the quarter, but were unable to cut into the lead, as Penn State's Mackenzie Allessie and Sophia Gladieux scored a goal each to give the Nittany Lions a 3-0 advantage heading into halftime. Spartan defender Georgia Davies recorded a defensive save in the second quarter, her second of the season.
Michigan State held Penn State to three shots and a scoreless third quarter. Davies and Lulu Fulton recorded shots in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans were unable to get on the board. Penn State sealed the victory with a penalty corner goal scored by Anna Simon.
Goalkeeper Monique Jardell played every minute for the Spartans in goal, recording five saves. The Spartans recorded six shots, four of which were on goal.
Michigan State stays on the road to face No. 3 Maryland at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25 in College Park, Md. The game will stream on B1G+.
