EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State used a strong offensive effort to take No. 19 Rutgers to overtime, but fell, 3-2, in the 66th minute after a Rutgers penalty stroke goal Friday afternoon at Ralph Young Field.
Rutgers' Indy van Ek broke the scoring open in the first quarter, scoring on a pass from Amanda Beck in the 11th minute. The Spartans tied the game, 1-1, after Ashley Harlock passed to Hannah Jarvie to score off a deflection in the 16th minute.
The game remained tied, 1-1, for the remainder of the half and throughout the third quarter. Isa van der Weij scored her first goal of the season in the fourth quarter off a penalty corner with assists from Harlock and Ellie Wheatley to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead. The Scarlet Knights responded in the 54th minute with a penalty corner goal of their own, scored by Puck Winter and assisted by Iris Langejans.
The game headed to overtime after both teams failed to score in the final minutes of regulation. Merel Hanssen recorded two shot attempts on goal but was unable to convert. Goalkeeper Monique Jardell put up a strong defensive effort, making three saves, while the Spartans added a team save in the closing seconds. Langejans scored off a penalty stroke in the 66th minute to claim the sudden-death victory for Rutgers.
Seven different Spartans recorded shot attempts in Friday's game, totaling nine shots, six of which were on goal. Hanssen led the Spartans in shot attempts with three, while Jardell recorded a season-high nine saves. The game marked the second-straight overtime contest for the Spartans.
"Rutgers fought for the entire game and it's tough to lose in overtime," said Spartans' head coach Helen Knull. "We played some fantastic hockey today but needed to capitalize on opportunities that we had."
Michigan State stays home to host Bellarmine on Sunday, Sept. 18. The game will take place at 1 p.m. at Ralph Young Field and will broadcast on B1G+.
