EAST LANSING, Mich. – Powered by a pair of goals from Emma O'Neill and Gracie Burns' first career goal, Michigan State field hockey took down #21 American, 3-1, in their season opener Friday at Ralph Young Field.
O'Neill opened the scoring early, recording a goal on an assist from defender Georgia Davies two minutes into the game. The Spartans held the Eagles to a single shot in the first quarter.
Burns gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead in the 25th minute of the game on an assisted goal. Michigan State's defense proved strong in the second quarter, as American failed to record a shot.
O'Neill scored her second goal of the game early in the third quarter, with Davies adding another assist. Spartans' goalkeeper Monique Jardell recorded her first save of the game in the 31st minute.
American avoided the shutout in the fourth quarter with Julia Kraft scoring the Eagles' lone goal of the game on an assist from Megan Hoffman. The Eagles recorded three shot attempts after Kraft's goal but were unable to complete the comeback as Jardell and the Spartans' defense preserved the net.
18 Spartans recorded minutes in the game, with four players (Davies, Burns, Skylar Santucci, and Madison Lasinski) making their first appearances in Spartan uniforms.
"We came out on a mission today, playing with intensity and purpose for 60 minutes," said Michigan State head coach Helen Knull. "It was great to be exposed in our exhibition games last week, and the team made good adjustments through the week which paid dividends today. It is great to get the season started with a win and we look forward to competing again Sunday."
