8/25/2022 10:24:00 PM | Women's Soccer
EAST LANSING, Mich. – On the back of a 29-2 shot differential, the Michigan State women's soccer team rolled in its home opener under the lights at DeMartin Stadium on Thursday night, capping off a 7-0 win over the Central Michigan Chippewas. Michigan State's seven goals scored marked the highest scoring output by the Spartans since a 7-0 demolition of Purdue Fort Wayne on Sept. 19, 2001.
Â
MSU moves to 2-0-1 on the season and has yet to surrender a goal through three matches, equaling the team's defensive start from one season ago. Central Michigan falls to 0-3 overall this year. The Spartans placed a whopping 14 shots on goal, without surrendering a single accurate attempt on the other end. Michigan State ended the game with nine corner kicks and allowed only one from the Chippewa side. In the box score, six Spartans were credited with goals highlighted by freshman forward Courtney Koehler's twin scores in the sixth and 66th minutes, respectively.
Â
The Green & White absolutely dominated the opening 45 minutes of play, with MSU outshooting the Chippewas by a remarkable 17-0 margin. Michigan State notched nine shots on goal and amassed a 6-0 edge in corner kicks. Koehler opened the scoring in the sixth minute, with graduate forward Camryn Evans breaking away from a Chippewa defender and placing a perfect pass on the money that led to the icebreaker. Four minutes later, Evans secured her own score to put the Spartans ahead 2-0 with an assist credited to graduate defender Ruby Diodati.
Â
Junior forward MJ Andrus tacked on MSU's third goal of the game in a hubbub around the CMU goal, while sophomore forward Jordyn Wickes finalized the 4-0 halftime score with a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner of the goal, assisted by junior midfielder Zivana Labovic.
Â
MSU rolled into the second half with the same dominance exhibited in the first, outshooting Central Michigan 12-2 and adding three more scores in the final period. Former Chippewa and senior forward Lauren DeBeau put the Spartans ahead by a 5-0 score off an assist from graduate defender Samantha White. Koehler added her second goal of the game on a pass from Labovic in the 66th and senior midfielder Ally Childers capped the scoring off in the 79th minute on a dish by junior defender Regan Dalton.
Â
In the goal, the Spartans went with a two-keeper tandem for the first time in the 2022 campaign, with senior Lauren Kozal manning the net in the first half and freshman Belle Okoroafo playing in the second. The duo combined for MSU's third shutout of the year, and Kozal secured the win in the process. For Central Michigan, Emma Shingler stood watch over the goal and booked seven saves with seven goals allowed, while being saddled with the loss.

On Michigan State's dominant performance against Central Michigan...
"I'd say it was a lot fun. We got over 25 field players in the contest. Belle (Okoroafo) was able to get her first minutes and played really well the whole 45 minutes that she was in. I'd say it was unquestionably a whole team effort. The group was really focused this week, know we let some opportunities pass us by at Cincinnati on Sunday. We really emphasized our combination play and creating scoring moments, and obviously that showed. We executed really well; we scored some brilliant goals today. You put up seven goals on anyone that is really impressive. I am thrilled with the way that the team prepared for this week and prepared for this match. They executed the game plan and stuck with it throughout and didn't let the game get loose."
