MADISON, Wis. – The Michigan State softball team nearly came back to defeat Wisconsin on Friday afternoon, falling to the Badgers 3-2 at Goodman Field. A two-run home run in the sixth inning gave the Spartans a chance late, but Wisconsin hunkered down for the victory.
A loss to Wisconsin evens Michigan State's overall record this season at 21-21.
Fifth-year Caitie Ladd was one of two Spartans to reach base twice on Friday, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Senior Courtney Callahan walked in the fourth inning as Michigan State's first baserunner of the contest before homering in the sixth.
Sophomore Ashley Miller (11-11) was strong in the circle and got better as the game progressed, striking out nine in six innings of work. Miller allowed two earned runs on seven hits.
Wisconsin scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an early 3-0 lead over Michigan State. Lauren Foster led off the inning with a solo shot to center field for the Badgers before Fiona Girardot plated Eden Dempsey on a single to right. A defensive miscue allowed Girardot to score on a fielder's choice later in the inning.
A walk from senior Jessica Mabrey put a runner on for Callahan in the top of the sixth, where her two-run home run would put the Spartans back in contention. Callahan entered the week without a long ball to her name this season but has now hit home runs in back-to-back games.
UP NEXT: The Spartans will face the Badgers in game two of the three-game series at 2:00 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 16.
