Elise Sokolsky was the losing pitcher of record for UConn, allowing six hits, five earned runs, and two walks over 1.1 innings pitched.
Barroso and junior Camryn Wincher each had multi-hit performances for the Spartans, each going 2-for-4 at the plate. Senior Mackenzie Meech, freshman Macy Lee, redshirt sophomore Jenae Wash and Miller also recorded hits in the contest. MSU recorded five stolen bases in game one with fifth year Caitie Ladd, senior Courtney Callahan, Miller, Meech and Wash each swiping a bag.
Michigan State got the ball rolling early against the Huskies. Wincher started a two-out rally when her single to left center in the bottom of the first advanced Miller to second after she reached on a fielder's choice. Barroso singled up the middle to score Miller, and Lee drove home Wincher on a double to right. The Spartans held a 2-0 advantage after one.
MSU tacked on three runs in the second inning after Wash singled to start the frame. A single from Miller advanced Wash third, setting up Meech to drive Wash home on a single up the middle. Michigan State forced a change in the circle for UConn but wasted no time jumping on the new hurler when Barroso drove in both Miller and Meech on a single up the middle.
Miller battled through adversity in the top of the fifth, facing two on with two out before getting UConn's Briana Marcelino to ground out to finish the inning.
The Spartans extended the lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth after a passed ball and a wild pitch allowed sophomore Marissa Trivelpiece to advance to third. A sac fly from junior Kennedy Wyllie brought Trivelpiece home.
