EAST LANSING, Mich. – After opening the spring season on the road at Notre Dame, the Michigan State women's tennis team is set for its home opener on Sunday, Jan. 30, hosting DePaul at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
The first home match with spectators for the Spartans since March 8, 2020, Sunday's contest will start a stretch where four of MSU's next six matches are in East Lansing.
"The Spartan fans that come out are always amazing," said head coach Kim Bruno. "There's a great athletic community here, and I know our girls are just looking forward to showcase their abilities to people. It's always a treat for us to be at home in East Lansing."
Bruno's squad began its spring slate of dual matches on Jan. 22, dropping a 6-1 affair with the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame won two doubles matches to grab the first point despite senior Nicole Stephens and sophomore Ayshe Can erasing a 4-1 deficit against Page Freeman and Yashna Yellayi, as that Spartan pair fell 7-5 while senior Lauren Lemonds and freshman Charlotte Gisclon dropped the third doubles match by a 6-2 score. Can then won on the No. 4 court by defeating Meghan Coleman (6-3, 6-2) to give MSU one point, and Stephens nearly got the Spartans a win at the No. 3 spot but Yellayi prevailed over her in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory that was one of the five singles draws to go in favor of the Irish.
Can and Gisclon now lead the team alongside senior Maja Pietrowicz with four singles wins apiece this season, while Pietrowicz and graduate student Mary Lewis own the best doubles record at 7-5 this season and are 1-1 against ranked duos.
DePaul entered the weekend set to face two Big Ten opponents in a three-day span, as the Blue Demons lost against Wisconsin on Friday, moving them to 1-2 on the season after beating Bradley and losing to Army. Eleanor Nobbs paces DePaul with a 9-5 singles mark and the most successful doubles pairing for the team has been Lenka Antonijevic and Yuliya Kizelbasheva at a 10-4 record.
Michigan State will jump back on the road to Cincinnati, Ohio next weekend, facing Virginia Tech in a neutral-site match on Feb. 5 before playing at Xavier the next day, Feb. 6.
