EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's tennis hosts Toledo and Bucknell this Saturday, Jan. 29, for a pair of dual matches inside the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Play will kick off against Toledo at 10 a.m. followed by a 6 p.m. start against Bucknell.Â
SPARTANS CONTINUE EARLY SUCCESS
The Spartans have opened their season with a 4-0 record, their best start since 2011 when the Green & White picked up nine straight wins to start the year.Â
A week after earning two wins in the season opener, the Spartans picked up a pair of victories over Cleveland State and IUPUI on Saturday, Jan. 22. Opening the day with a 7-0 sweep of the Cleveland State Vikings, MSU went on to win 6-1 against IUPUI, surrenduring just one point in singles play to the Jaguars.Â
Michigan State earned the doubles point in both matches, highlighted by wins from Jack Winkler and Reed Crocker at No. 2 against Cleveland State, and a win on the top court by Nick Williams and Kazuki Matsuno against IUPUI.Â
Both of the top singles matches were won by the Spartans, with Winkler winning in a three-set battle against Cleveland State's Maxime Mareschal-Hay. Williams won at No. 1 against the Jaguars and Alex Jochim, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.Â
COACH ORLANDO'S THOUGHTS
"We are excited for the opportunity to play two great opponents this weekend. We are looking to build off our momentum from our fast start and are grateful for each day, and are treating every day as a chance to get better."
SERIES NOTES
The Spartans are a perfect 21-0 all time against Toledo, having played out the majority of duals in East Lansing with a 20-0 home record. Last time out, Michigan State bested the Rockets 4-3 in March of 2020.Â
This will be just the second-ever meeting between Michigan State and the Bucknell Bison. The first encounter between the two teams was a match in 2018 hosted on Penn State's campus, in which the Spartans swept Bucknell 4-0.Â
UP NEXT
Michigan State takes to the road for the first time this season to play Western Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 5. The dual match in Kalamazoo is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
The Spartans are back home on Saturday, Feb. 12 for matches against Louisville and Chicago State.
