EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women's tennis team is set to begin the spring portion of its schedule on Saturday, Jan. 22, when it heads to Notre Dame for the Spartans' first dual match of the season.
MSU will take on the Fighting Irish at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
"We are excited to get the spring season going," said head coach Kim Bruno. "The team has been training hard, and they are ready to get back to competition. Notre Dame is a tough opponent to start the non-conference schedule with, but I feel confident we can compete with them and I see a path to victory."
The Spartans had a successful fall in tournament action, as graduate student Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz entered the fall season ranked as the No. 28 doubles pairing by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The duo started its eventful fall campaign by competing in the ITA All-American Championships and beating the No. 41 doubles team in the nation before losing to the third-ranked pairing. Lewis and Pietrowicz then became the first Spartan doubles pairing to advance to the semifinals of an Intercollegiate Tennis Association main draw event since at least 1998, as the duo won two matches in the ITA Midwest Super Regionals at Ohio State before falling to the current No. 29-ranked pairing. The Spartan pair finished the fall circuit with a run to the consolation semifinals at the ITA National Fall Championships, going 2-2 in San Diego.
Outside of Lewis and Pietrowicz, Nicole Stephens also found success in the fall slate, going 2-1 at the ITA Midwest Regionals that earned her a spot in the Super Regionals later on, while juniors Tia Mukherjee and Monique Karoub went 3-0 in doubles play and a combined 5-1 in singles matches to win the Wildcat Invite at Northwestern University.
Notre Dame features the doubles pairing of Page Freeman and Julia Lilien, who were No. 37 in the ITA fall preseason rankings. The Fighting Irish kicked off their spring slate last weekend at the Michigan Invite, and are set to host Kentucky on Friday, Jan. 21 in their dual-match opener before playing the Spartans the following day.
Michigan State returns to East Lansing for its home opener on Jan. 30, an 11 a.m. meeting with DePaul at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
