EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's tennis team hosts its first fall tournament this weekend, the annual MSU Drobac/Beeman Invitational. Competition begins Friday morning, Oct. 1, and continues through Oct. 3.
Matches will be played at Mason High School due to the outdoor courts on the campus of MSU being under construction. In the case of inclement weather, matches will move back to campus to be played at the indoor tennis courts on Mt Hope road.
Seven teams will make the trip this weekend to East Lansing. In-state rival Western Michigan, whom the Spartans faced at the Notre Dame Invite on Sept. 24, will be in attendance. Fellow Big Ten teams Indiana, Illinois and Northwestern are expected, as well as Marquette, Louisville and Notre Dame, the host of last week's Bayliss Invite.
Each team in the main draw is guaranteed four singles and four doubles matches.
The Spartans have competed in two tournaments so far this fall. Graydon Lair and Carson Gates saw action at the Milwaukee Invite on Sept. 18, and the team competed in both singles and doubles matches last week at the Notre Dame Invite, going 26-19 overall.
Luke Baylis and Anthony Pero finished their matches in South Bend each with a 5-1 mark. Freshmen Josh Portnoy and Max Sheldon picked up the first wins of their Spartan career over the weekend, with wins over rival Michigan and Northwestern. After a hiatus dating back to 2019, Jack Winkler was back on the court and earned a singles win over his Michigan foe and a doubles victory with Reed Crocker against Illinois.
"We are excited to host the Beeman/Drobac MSU Invite this weekend," head coach Gene Orlando said. "We have an incredibly strong field, and this tournament certainly has a national-level event feel. It's a great opportunity for our players to be tested early in our fall season to see where we are in the development of our program. We have put in the work, and now it's go time!"
