
Michigan State Hosts No. 4 Michigan for Weekend Series

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's field hockey team returns home to Ralph Young Field, hosting in-state rival Michigan for a pair of games this weekend. The teams open the weekend on Friday, April 2 (3 p.m.) and close out the series on Sunday, April 4 (1 p.m.).
Both games will be streamed on BTN Plus.
The Spartans and Wolverines will play two games this weekend, but only the first game will count toward Big Ten standings. Per rules from the league's coaches, all teams will play two games per weekend against conference opponents, but only the first game will count toward Big Ten standings.
Michigan State enters the weekend with a 1-8 overall record and a 1-5 mark in the Big Ten Conference.
Five different players have scored goals for the Spartans, led by junior defender Isa van de Weij (Naarden, The Netherlands/Sint Vintus College), who has scored two goals. Sophomores Nienke Bloemsaat (Oosterhout, The Netherlands/Sint-Gelbert Gymnasium) and Celina Riccardo (Downington, Pa./Downington East) and freshmen Emma O"Neill (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and Ellie Wheatley (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) have scored one goal apiece.
Junior midfielder Lia Sinisi (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex, N.J.).leads the team with two assists.
Junior goalkeeper Jade Arundell (County Kildare, Ireland/The Kings Hospital) leads the team with 30 saves and has a 3.16 goals-against average, while classmate Monique Jardell (Granville, Ohio/Granville), who has started the last four games, has a 4.15 GAA and 12 saves.
Michigan is ranked No. 4 in the country by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). The Wolverines enter the weekend with a 5-2 overall record and a 4-0 mark in the Big Ten. Michigan swept a series with Rutgers last weekend as Kathryn Peterson scored the deciding goals in both wins, earning NFHCA and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Michigan leads the all-time series with Michigan State, 43-26-7, and has won the last six meetings. MSU's last win was a 2-1 decision during the 2014 season.
