EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State track & field started the outdoor season with bang at the Big Ten Indiana Invitational No. 1 in Bloomington, Indiana at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex.
"This was one of our best meets that we have ever had. It was just a lot of positive progression. We had some first-round National Qualifiers; people with PRs; people winning heats. So much momentum has already happened after the indoor season, and everyone was just out there supporting one another," Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said. "It was evident that level of support is meaningful because it was producing the results today for both genders."
The action began for Michigan State on Friday with a quartert of Spartans competing in the men's and women's pole vault. Juniors Sophia Franklin (4.25m) and Calli Ostapowicz (3.70m), finished second and 11th, respectively. On the men's side, senior Wade Walder began a terrific meet with a personal-best in the pole vault (5.00m) to finish fourth, while junior Trevor Stephenson's best vault was 4.85m.
"We had a number of really positive performances today. It is a sign of a cultural progression and a cultural change. I really want the teams to recognize that they are the ones pushing us forward because they are the ones taking a higher level of ownership and accountability in their roles. They are taking it seriously and building relationships with one another," Breznau said.
On Saturday, senior Jerimiah Evans started MSU out strong finishing fourth in the shot put (18.08m) and second in the discus (57.28m). Junior Rebecca Mammel was third in the hammer throw, nearing her PR with a best throw of 59.57m.
Junior Olivia Lopez moved her success from indoor into outdoor season with a third-place finish in the long jump with a PR jump of 5.91m. On the men's side, Adoni Kirkland had a standout performance to finish seventh with a jump of 7.15m.
Junior Shakira Dancy won her heat in both the 400m and the 200m dash. Dancy finished fourth in the 200m with a time of 24.30 and seventh in the 400m with a time of 57.31. Freshman Kaia Scheffler also won her heat in the 110m hurdles to finish seventh overall, clocking in at 14.01.
In the men's 200m, junior Antonio Postell finished fifth (21.93). In the 400m, Postell posted a time of 52.10. Sophomore Kendel Hammock won his heat en route to finishing third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.61 in a breakout performance.
Senior John Petruno earned a personal best in the 1500 to finish third (3:49.26), while Abdi Ahmed (3:55.30) and Jeremy Kloss (3:55.80), finished 14th and 16th, respectively.
