Sprinters Shine at the B1G Indiana Invite #2

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Despite several weather delays, the Spartan track & field team had a strong showing, led by the sprinting squad at the B1G Indiana Invite #2, hosted by Indiana University at the Billy Hayes Track & Field Complex on Friday.
What was originally scheduled for a two-day meet was condense into one due to inclement weather in the Bloomington area.
"I thought that we had a really great day. Most importantly, they just controlled what they could. The sprints, hurdles and jumps just started the day really well for us. Everyone was at their best today, and when you come in with that mentality; it just becomes contagious" Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said. "We ended up with some really great performances, some heat winners a lot of PRs. There was just a lot of positives coming out of today."
The Spartans went 1-2 in the men's 200m dash. Junior Antonio Postell captured a new personal best with a time of 21.57 to take first, while senior Joseph McCarthy ran a 21.70 to take second. In the men's 400m hurdles, sophomore Kendel Hammock was just off his season best with a time of 53.81 to take fifth.
Michigan State also went 1-2 in the women's 200m with junior Shakira Dancy earning the first of two top-three performances on the day. Senior Brooke Bogan was second with a time of 24.82. In the 100m, she also took third with a time of 12.00 to finish third. This was the second-straight week she has hit 12.00 in the event. Bogan also took gold with a PR time of 11.93.
The Spartans continued to have success in the sprints as junior Jaiden Paris had a personal best time of 14.08 to finish first, while freshman Kaia Scheffler was third with a time of 14.45. In the 400m, hurdles senior Haley Rathwell clocked in at 1:03.58, while Scheffler ran a time of 1:05.79 on a busy day for the freshman.
In his first outdoor meet of the season, senior Morgan Beadlescomb had huge personal best in the 1500m with a time 3:41.69. His previous best was 3:45.27 at the Virginia Challenge in 2019. John Petruno took fifth place with a PR time of 3:45.83.
Senior John Gove had a solid performance in the men's 800m to finish ninth. He recorded a new personal best with a time of 1:51.93. His previous best was 1:52.89 at the Jesse Owens Classic in 2019.
"Everyone was chose to engage and compete today, especially, later on in the day when the weather delays started when the 1500m women were on the track. They just all handled it really well. They stayed calm they all got on the bus. I feel awful for Calli (Ostapowicz) and Sophia (Franklin) who didn't get to finish the pole vault." Breznau said.
The women's pole vault was not completed, but the men's pole vault was able to finish earlier in the day. Junior Trevor Stephenson finished second with a season-best vault of 5.20m.
Weather delays canceled the remainder of the pole vault pushing several races after 11 p.m.
In her first outdoor meet of the season, senior All-American Dillon McClintock finished fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:09.35,as the only Spartan in the race.
In their first 4x100m relay of the season, the team of Bogan, Dancy, Paris and Scheffler ran a time of 46.40. The men's 4x100m relay squad of Hammock, McCarthy, Postell and Jonathan Fife crossed the line with a time of 41.14.
Following the B1G Indiana Invite #2, the Spartans will split squads with part of the team going to the back to Bloomington with the Big Ten Indiana Invite #3 and the rest going to the Husker Big Ten Invitational in Prairie View, Texas and hosted by the University of Nebraska.
