Spartans Fall to Rutgers, 2-0, on Friday Afternoon
3/12/2021 4:15:00 PM | Field Hockey
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's field hockey team struggled to start and Rutgers took advantage, scoring goals in the first half en route to a 2-0 win over the Spartans in Piscataway, N.J. on Friday afternoon.
The Spartans fall to 1-3 overall this season and 1-3 in the Big Ten, while Rutgers improves to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.
"We started the game very slowly and with a lack of energy, which we cannot let happen again," Head Coach Helen Knull said. "Rutgers capitalized on opportunities because we were not controlling the controllable.
"We made adjustments at the half and started to gain momentum in our play but were unable to finish. We have another opportunity to play them on Sunday and I'm looking for the team to bounce back and start the game how we mean to and perform for four quarters."
The Scarlet Knights scored their first goal just over a minute left in the first quarter when Liz-Elaine Stange took a feed from Kassidy Shetler to give RU the 1-0 lead.
Rutgers added a second goal with 9:30 left before halftime on a goal from Liz Romano.
After managing just one shot in the first half, the Spartans had four shots in the second half and a pair of penalty corners.
Michigan State closes its two-game series with Michigan State on Sunday, March 14 at noon. A live stream of the game will be available on BTNPlus.
