MSU sent a limited squad to Bloomington.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Michigan State indoor track & field returned to action at the Hoosier Hills Invitational, earning several personal bests Saturday at Gladstein Fieldhouse in Bloomington, Indiana.
Michigan State competed against athletes from host Indiana, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin. This is the Spartans' second meet at Gladstein Fieldhouse after competing at the Gladstein Invitational on Jan. 23.
"I think we did well. We brought a smaller group today, a really small group on the women's side. We did a good job carrying over some of the key things that we have talked about since the beginning, most importantly behaving as a more cohesive team and supporting one another," MSU Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said. "I think we still have work to do in that area, as well as continuing to control our environment. Those that chose to do that today did well."
On the women's side, sophomore Olivia Lopez had a busy day, competing in the high jump, long jump and making her debut in the 60m hurdles. She finished second in the long jump with a personal best leap of 5.76m. Her previous best was 5.73m at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational on Jan. 16. She was also fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.55m, while ending seventh in her season debut in the 60m hurdles (9.38).
"Olivia was great today; she had a PR today in the long jump, and she performed well in the high and the hurdles. She has been a lot of fun to watch develop. She works really hard at it in practice, so to see her put the pieces together in a competition is extra rewarding," Breznau said.
The Spartans had a pair of pole vaulters in action on Saturday. Junior Sophia Franklin finished third with a vault of 3.91m, while junior Calli Ostapowicz finished sixth, clearing 3.61m.
Freshman Kaia Scheffler had a strong Spartan debut, finishing eighth in the 200m with a time of 26.21. She also ran her first 60m with a time of 7.99. Senior Brooke Bogan also finished sixth in the 60m with a time of 7.70.
On the men's side, sophomore Antonio Postell had a personal best in the 200m, clocking a 21.96. Senior John Gove also registered a PR with a time of 1:53.90 to finish sixth in the 800m. Junior Jalen Smith was also seventh in the 800m with a time of 1:57.93.
Junior Dan Stone had a solid day in the throws as well. Stone earned a PR in the weight throw with a heave of 18.72m to finish third. Junior Jerimiah Evans finished third in the shot put with a throw of 17.67m, while Stone returned to finish sixth with a heave of 16.11m.
Michigan State will be back in action with a full squad next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13 at the B1G SPIRE Invitational in Geneva, Ohio.
