
Magness Set MSU Record on First Day of B1G SPIRE Invitational Friday

Two Spartans finish first in day-one action.
EAST LANSING , Mich. - On the first day of the B1G SPIRE Invitational, junior Jenna Magness set a new Michigan State record, as the indoor track and field team began action in Geneva, Ohio Friday.
Magness shattered the Michigan State record in the women's 5,000m, finishing first with a time of 15:42.73. The previous record was held by Emily MacLeod in 2011 with a time of 15:48.20. Magness' time was the third-fastest in the NCAA this season. The Spartans dominated the event with three athletes in the top four. Senior Lynsie Gram finished third with a PR time of 15:56.30,while senior India Johnson was fourth with a time of 16:26.99.
Junior Sophia Franklin took first in the pole vault clearing 4.20m, earning her best marks of the season. Fellow junior Calli Ostapwicz finished fifth with a vault of 3.75.
Sophomore Olivia Lopez had a solid day, competing in her first collegiate pentathlon, finishing second with 3,596 points. She took first in the long jump with a jump of 5.75m. She also had a personal best in the high jump with a jump of 1.58m. Lopez also captured first in the 800m in her first collegiate race with a time of 2:22.9.
On the men's side, the Spartans also dominated the 5,000m. Returning from illness, Morgan Beadlescomb returned to form finishing third with a time of 14:02.42. He was one of three Michigan State athletes to finish in the top 10 in the highly competitive race. Junior Steve Stine was seventh with a PR time of 14:18.61, while junior Joe Riordan crossed the line ninth with a time of 14:20.68, which was also a personal best.
Junior Trevor Stephenson finished second in the pole vault, clearing 5.20m, which was a new personal best. After four events, freshman Ryan Talbot is fourth in the heptathlon with 2,894 points.
Day two action at the B1G SPIRE Invitational begins on the track at 11 a.m. with the prelims of the women's 60m hurdle. Field events also begin at 11 a.m. with the women's triple jump.Â
